That was certainly a hectic few days & for some that have other breeds besides Dachshunds last weekend proved to be a mammoth & exhausting time! Both Midland Counties all breeds championship show & the Great Joint Dachshund Association had attracted numerically good sized entries for both our varieties with Longs & Min Longs having CCs on offer at both events. One thing I always associate Midland Counties with is the clocks changing over the weekend & British Summer Time comes to a close with Winter officially with us. Even more depressing is the news that the Long CCs at Midland Counties were sadly to be our last set on offer at this popular Midlands show. Whatever the reason or secret ingredient, Longs always seem to attract a numerical entry here but sadly now this will be no more. We can only hope that the society will continue to offer us classes without CCs on offer.
Friday was Hound Day at Midland Counties with a 9 am start for both our varieties. Per Iverson from Norway was awarding CCs in Longs for the first time, an FCI All Breed judge but has bred & owned Smooth Haired Dachshunds amongst other breeds that include Fox Terriers & Flat Coated Retrievers. BCC & BOB was Daniel Roberts’ Ch Swansford Gemmadora with Janet Geeson’s Abydachs Miraval taking the RBCC. DCC (his second) was Maggie Peat’s US Ch Pramada’s Xavier With Jordachs making one of his rare trips from across the pond to visit us. RDCC was Zara Boyle’s Ch Zarcrest Hugo Boss with Emily Mitchell collecting BP with Bronia D’Artagnan.
Nora Price (Samlane Min Wires & Min smooths) had attracted a bumper Min Long entry awarding the DCC & BOB to Will Harris & Lyndsey McLachlan’s Ch Zarcrest Black Smith. RDCC was Sue & Roger Roberts’ Ch Ralines Rob Roy To Denver. Ruth Lockett-Walters & Helen Walters’ Ralines Honeycrisp collected her first BCC & Barbara Metcalfe’s Metadale Ariadne was awarded the RBCC handled by daughter Suzanne. Linda Brown’s Dolyharp Puccini With Garbosa was BP.
For those lucky enough to be able to spend a night away from home, an overnight stay in the Midlands seemed like the best option in readiness for the Great Joint DA at Wolverhampton the following day. Next year, the Great Joint will be moving to the Sports Connection in Coventry & will revert back to its usual November date. The morning started extremely chilly with a biting wind & dare I say a few flurries of snow! Having used Aldersley to stage many past Midland DC shows I have seen many changes, with the majority for the better. This year although all appeared like nothing had changed it soon became clear that the sports hall had been polished which resulted in a challenging day for both Dachshunds & humans alike. Some of our dogs, especially youngsters & puppies, found the floor quite daunting & certainly tried the confidence in many. Even some older well-seasoned exhibits did not seem their usual relaxed self while gaiting around the rings, a pity. Lloyd Cross (Loggeta Longs & Min smooths) awarded the BCC & BOB to Lesley McNaughton’s Ch Cedavoch Circe with Daniel Roberts’ Ch Swansford Gemmadora collecting the RBCC. DCC (his first) was Glenda Marks’ Labbadax Lewisville Texas with Fran Mitchell’s Ch Bronia True Legacy taking the RDCC. Emily Mitchell’s Bronia D’Artagnan once again being awarded BP. Trish Rhodes & Irene Cook’s Abydachs Rides The Storm To Bournder was awarded Best Veteran In Breed & after judging it was lovely to join Irene to help celebrate her ‘Special’ birthday with cake, nibbles & a few tipples!
Zara Boyle (Zarcrest Longs, Min Longs, Min smooths & American Cockers) judged Min Longs giving the Ralines kennel of Ruth Lockett-Walters & Helen Walters a day to remember. BCC (her second in two days) was Ralines Honeycrisp who went on to Reserve Best In Show under Wendy Barrow (Frankanwen Longs) with Ch Ralines Just Ozzie collecting the DCC, Best Veteran & going onto Best Miniature Veteran In Show. Dawn Norton’s Halunke Pure Magic was awarded the RDCC & Lynn Bell’s Tolberg Cream Treat JW ShCM was awarded the RBCC handled by Adam Rowell. Best Puppy was Maureen Poole’s Findowrie Mr McKenzie who finished the day taking Best Puppy In Show under Wendy Barrow.
For some, the busy few days had started on Thursday with Gundogs at Midland Counties & for others ended on Sunday with Utility & Toys there. For others, many miles were clocked up in doing return road trips & for others shows were sandwiched in between night shifts! For most, a busy but rewarding weekend but most of all it was great to catch up with so many friends, some we haven’t seen for a while too. Most enjoyable.
The latest Kennel Journal gives us a few confirmed judges. In 2019, at Border Union Pauline Kerslake will be awarding her first set of CCs in Min Longs. At the Great Joint, Claire Bethel is to judge Longs & Yvonne Kent Min Longs. In 2020, at Birmingham National, Bill Brown-Cole will award CCs in Longs for the first time with Gavin Robertson judging Min Longs at Midland Counties. SKC will see Sue Hewitt-Chambers judging Longs.
Peter Walker had a great day at the Guernsey Kennel Club show last weekend taking Best In Show with his Long Africandawns Night Lement; many congratulations!
This weekend sees the Eastern Counties DA stage their championship show in Peterborough. Longs have CCs on offer with Min Smooths & Wires. Entries are coming up to close too for the Midland DC Christmas open show at Calf Heath, Wolverhampton on 2nd December. All details are on Fosse Data.
