Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 23/8/18

As most of you will now be aware Liz Cartlidge was feeling unwell at the Welsh Kennel Club dinner on the eve before the first day of the show last week. An ambulance was called & Liz was taken to Hereford Hospital where she remained for a few days undergoing tests. I’m pleased to report that Liz is now home at Ryslip & recovering well. Certainly one of most popular all-breed judges & friend to all of us, looking after the youngsters & always has time for a chat, advice & encouragement for everyone without exception. Let’s wish Liz continued improvement & hopefully she will be back with us all very soon.

We can all moan & groan about distances travelled to shows especially when it comes to the Welsh Kennel Club which for many has the last hour of travelling through some of the most beautiful parts of Wales that you will see at a speed of a snail! So it was a lovely surprise to see our friend Maggie Peat over from the States exhibiting & catching up with everyone. Back in 2016, Maggie broke records by gaining BOB at Crufts with her Long Am Ch Pramada’s Xavier With Jorddachs under Roy Wood (Wildstar) & going onto Group Four under Jeff Horswell (Drakesleat). It was great to see them both back in the ring at Wales & all credit to them when you think of the time & cost involved to achieve this. Maggie & her parents are true supporters & devotees of Longs around the world & we are certainly blessed that their interest is extended to our variety here in the UK, having worked well in the past with Fran & Emily Mitchell’s Bronia kennel.

We are about to enter a run of all-breed championship shows where both our varieties are scheduled without CCs. In fact, Longs only have 6 sets of CCs left & Min Longs 8 sets. At Birmingham City, both are scheduled without & a disappointing 3 Longs are entered with a more encouraging 30 Min Longs. At Richmond once again neither have CCs & Longs have attracted 11 dogs with 24 Min Longs. Schedules are now available for the Lancashire & Cheshire DA Championship show on 20th October which will once again be held in St Helens. No CCs for either variety but a great classification where Sharron Shone will judge Longs & Kevin Hirst Min Longs. Schedules are available (along with all other forthcoming shows) on Fay Hutchings’ Showdach website. Please don’t forget that the Great Joint DA also have a change of date for its championship show this year. Now being held on Saturday 27th October at the usual Aldersley Leisure Centre in Wolverhampton which is the day after Hounds at Midland Counties. Both our varieties have CCs on offer at both shows.

This weekend sees the last Bank Holiday Monday for 2018. How quickly this year seems to be going. Both our varieties have CCs on offer at SKC on Saturday with Mark Cocozza judging in place of Tony Johnson. The August Bank Holiday weekend always used to be the date for Leicester City All Breeds Championship Show where Min Longs had CC status. Unfortunately, championship show status was withdrawn way back in 1992 by the KC following several moves in venue & a run of bad luck. I certainly remember their last show well as my (Ch) Dandydayo Kamand Maker won the Hound Puppy Group under Roy Metcalfe (Metadale) where we were knee-high in mud! Leicester City now run a very popular & successful open show on August Bank Holiday Monday & this year I’m thrilled to be judging the Hound Group, some 26 years after that most memorable of days!

Whatever you8re up to this weekend, enjoy & don’t forget to drop me a line with your news.
