Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 02/8/18

Everyone (well almost everyone) had been praying for rain & their wish was certainly granted on Hound day at Leeds! An 8.30am start for some varieties gave us an earlier start than the majority of other Hound & Gundog breeds & in some ways got us into the venue at Harewood House with no problems. This year had the Northern Counties Dachshund Association hold their championship show in partnership with Leeds which gave some lucky exhibitors the joy of winning two CCs in one day with the same dog.

New Secretary Lynne Bell certainly had her work cut out on the day & most certainly will have covered a fair few miles with all her running around. It’s fair to say as you would expect that a few issues were experienced in this first partnership event & without doubt will be addressed for next year. It’s certainly difficult staging any show & making it successful let alone (as I know only too well) a partnership event. Next year will see Leeds with a full set of Dachshund CCs on offer & Chairman of NCDA Fran Mitchell tells me that planning for both events is already well underway to help give everyone an enjoyable day.

With the rain hitting us for the first few hours, the majority of the day stayed dry with quite a strong wind coming through our tents. By 4pm the rain returned with some thunder for added fun. Certainly, a busy, eventful day which kept us all on our toes with plenty to see & as usual we took everything in our stride.

At Leeds, Longs had CCs on offer with all-rounder Albert Wight starting judging at 8.30am. Cindy Dare had one of those days we all dream of, taking the BCC (her second) & BOB with Darsoms Zeunice & the DCC with Ch Swansford Lionellador Darsoms. RDCC was Janet Geeson’s Abydachs Seize The Night handled by daughter Helen with the RBCC going to Lesley McNaughton’s Ch Cedavoch Circe. Lloyd Cross handled Tony Johnson’s Africandawns Night Trooper to BP & Best Veteran was Ken & Sandra Paskins’ Ch Abydachs Summer Dream At Kindeace ShCM.

Sharon Shone had drawn a very good non-CC entry of Min Longs at Leeds, awarding BB, BOB & BP to Ruth Lockett-Walters & daughter Helen’s Ralines Good Tidings who went onto Hound Puppy Group Four under Keith Nathan. BD was Ken & Sandra Paskins’ Dinkidax Sandrayana At Kindeace with Mags Oxley taking RBD with Lokmadi Rio Bravo At Dinkidax. RBB was Andrew Whitfield-Roberts’ Dandydayo I Am Moana.

Min Longs had CCs on offer at NCDA with an 8.30am start & judge Juliet Cooper (Merrygarth Longs) wasted no time going through her entry awarding the DCC (his second) & BOB to Roy Woods’ Wildstar Wreward with Roy also taking the RDCC with Ch Wildstar Wrobinson JW. BCC (a very quick second) was Helen Geeson’s Abydachs Avada Kedavra who also collected her final points on the day towards her Junior Warrant. RBCC was Lynn Brooks’ recently crowned Ch Lyndarlea Vienna with BP going to Ruth Lockett-walters & Daughter Helen’s Ralines Honeycrisp.

Longs were judged without CCs at the NCDA by Ian Sidgwick (Paulian Min Longs) with the same numerical entry as of Leeds with CCs. BD & BOB was Janet Geeson’s Abydachs Seize The Night with Cindy taking RBD with Ch Swansford Lionellador Darsoms. BB was Daniel Roberts’ Ch Swansford Gemmadora with RBB going to Janet Geeson’s Abydachs Kumala. BP was Lesley McNaughton’s Cedavoch Sweetest Taboo.

Margaret Turner (Marictur Smooths ) decided the final awards at the NCDA, awarding Best In Show to Michael Paget & Gary Carroll’s Min Smooth Ch Marvale Up With The Lark & Reserve Best In Show to Heather Blackburn-Bennett’s Min Wire Ch Stargang Catch The Rainbow who had won two CCs on the day. Best Puppy In Show was Rhian Williams & Chris Moes’ Smooth Cwmadrhian Tom Hardy with Chris Gibson’s Wire Allfreys Helena taking Reserve Best Puppy In Show.

A few entry figures have been released for forthcoming shows. SKC sees one of the best Long entries for Scotland for some time. Such a shame Tony Johnson has had to withdraw from his appointment & I’m sure you will join me in wishing Tony a speedy recovery. 28 Longs & 48 Min Longs both with CCs on offer for replacement judge Mark Cocozza. Onto Bournemouth where we have 23 Longs with CCs & 27 Min Longs without CCs & at WKC where both varieties have CCs 39 Longs & 59 Min Longs.

There seems to be plenty of interest around the World Show which commences over the weekend with several UK exhibitors attending. Hound day at Paighton is this Sunday where both our breeds are scheduled without CCs. The latest Dachshund Breed Council e-news gives us updates on IVDD & Lafora with details of plenty of past & future fundraising events. Certainly, another packed full edition that’s worth checking out & although only August details about the new charity Christmas Cards are included! I’m out & about with our Tibetan Spaniels over the weekend so please let me know your news, all formats accepted, phone, e-mail, text or messenger!
