Daniel Roberts’ Longhaired Dachshund Breed Notes 16/8/17

My sincere apologies to Nicola Spencer (Bannonbrig Spinoni & Dachshunds) who judged Longs without CCs at the Midland DC championship show for omitting her winners in last week’s notes where I reported on themammothh showing weekend.

Nicola had attracted a fabulous non-CC entry of 39 Longs awarding BD, BOB & BP to Cindy Dare’s Swansford Lionellador Darsoms who was to go on to a repeat performance a week later where CCs were on offer. Cindy also collected RBB with Darsoms Zeunice. RBD was Liz Garlick’s Ranglewood Arashi with Fran Mitchell’s Ch Bronia Precious Legacy collecting BB.

At Bournemouth all breeds championship show just Longs have CCs on offer with Jason Hunt (Carpaccio) judging just 15 on the day. DCC (his first), BOB & BP was Cindy Dare’s Swansford Lionellador Darsoms who went onto Puppy Group Four under Espen Engh. Cindy was also awarded the RBCC with Darsoms Zeuinice. Helen Geeson handled her Mother’s Ch Abydachs Giving Off Sparks to the BCC & her brother Abydachs Seize The Night to the RDCC.

Lyn Amos judged 25 Min Longs on the day without CCs, ten more than Longs with! Dave & Penny Young were awarded BB & BOB with Willowheath Silver Charmer & also RBD with Dolyharp Rytham And Blues With Willowheath. BD was Mrs Earley’s Lilacfen Sonny Delight Of Yelva with RBB & BP going to Helen Geeson’s Abydachs Avada Kedavra.

At the City Of Birmingham Championship Show neither of our varieties have CCs on offer but Serena Parker (Serenaker Beagles) has attracted 12 Longs & 21 Min Longs in a generous classification.

Schedules are now available for the Dachshund Club championship show which this year falls on Saturday 25th November. Once again being held at the KC Building at Stoneleigh Park with CCs on offer for all six varieties. All the details are now available on Fosse Data.

A feature at this year’s show will be a subsidised eye testing clinic which should cost £40.00 but thanks to the Dachshund Breed Council Health Fund this will be reduced to £25.00 per Dachshund. The examinations will be done by Lorna Newman & will take around 20 minutes. You must pre-book as spaces are limited & you must have your dog’s registration documents. You do not need to enter the show to take part in the eye testing & this is open to all breeds although only Dachshunds will have the benefit of the subsidy. In the first instance contact the DC Secretary Lady Lynda Billinghurst on 01905 821820.

How refreshing this is to have the old fashioned eye testing session being held at a show. Just because a dog is DNA clear it doesn’t mean you don’t need them screening for other abnormalities. Indeed, in my adopted breed Tibetan Spaniels we do have both tests readily available & not only do we DNA our dogs but all receive the physical eye examination. At the recent South Western TSA open show, their eye testing clinic was once again fully booked & we had another three Tibbies examined.

I do feel that in Dachshunds, for whatever reason, very few are now examined in this way & things like Distichiasis, especially in Min Longs, are going unrecorded. In my days of breeding Min Longs we used to attend the eye testing sessions at the Longhaired Club with Professor Bedford examining our dogs & yes, our dogs were lucky enough to pass but at least abnormalities such as Distichiasis were recorded on their certificates & as breeders we knew what we were dealing with. Maybe I’m just a little old fashioned but I do feel this is a great opportunity that the DC & DBC are offering to our varieties, let’s hope we see a good take-up & breeders take advantage of this great offer to get even more peace of mind,

It certainly looks like many are taking advantage of the excellent camping facilities on offer at Builth Wells ahead of the WKC championship show this weekend coming. All eligible breeds have CCs on offer with Mrs E Gonzalez from Gibralter awarding CCs in Dachshunds for the first time in the UK. It will be very interesting to see how what she makes of her Long entry & see her placings.

Next year, there will be even more activity on hound day at the WKC as the DC of Wales launch their partnership championship show on the same day, which will mean two sets of CCs for Longs, Min longs, Wires & Min Wires on offer in one day. This will give many more exhibitors an excuse to camp out & possibly make a holiday at this most beautiful venue at the heart of Wales.

Several people approached me at the MDC and said they hadn’t realised that these notes are continuing thanks to the DBC. Please spread the word & keep your news & views coming in, phone, text, email or catch up with me at a show, these notes are for you!
